A Tool - My Hands

At our last writing group, it was time for the writing prompt.  I got out my little yellow box of prompts. I had filled it with slips of paper at the beginning of the winter session. I couldn't remember anything I had put in there.

Paula chose a folded prompt and read it out loud, "A Tool". There were groans and sighs (one was from me).

"That's it! A tool?" someone said.

Then Paula responded, "That's the last time I'm picking the prompt!"

But, what seemed to be a yucky-sounding prompt, turned out to be a good one.  I'll share one each day.

My Hands

My hands are my tools as I work in the garden. The shovel and rake sit unused on the side. I don't even use gloves. I want to feel the cool, wet dirt between my fingers. I want to hold the tiny seeds in my palm and pinch them into their holes. I want to gently cover them.

Later, I'll use my hands to thin the plants, plucking extras and weeds. I'll tie up the vining tomatoes with twisty ties and the cantaloupe with old panty hose.  You can't use gloves to do those things.

Yes, fingers and hands are the best tools for gardening. Cleaning them, though can sometimes be a chore. Dirt under the nails just goes to show that I'm a gardener, so it doesn't bother me too much.

  1. This almost reads like a poem for me, Dawn. Great description. Makes me want to get outside and dig in the dirt.

  2. Hello! I'm on the A-to-Z train and dropped by your other blog, and then came to this one! It is my first time on a 'blog hop' so I admire your carrying it out on TWO blogs! I will bookmark and definitely make my way back to yours! One thing I see happening - I am going to discover so many incredible blogs, I will want to read them all every day!

    Blessings!
